On May 20th, we will discuss:
How Economics Explains the World, by Andrew Leigh
Considering where we are with tariffs today, and how they may lead to a reordering of our economic world, a great choice.
A sweeping, engrossing history of how economic forces have shaped the world in under 200 pages. Andrew Leigh presents a new way to understand the human story. From the dawn of agriculture to AI, here is the story of how ingenuity, greed, and desire for betterment have, to an astonishing degree, determined our past, present and future.
This small book tells a big story. It is the story of capitalism -- of how our market system developed. It is the story of the discipline of economics and some of the key figures who formed it. And it is the story of how economic forces have shaped world history. What happens when countries erected trade and immigration barriers in the 1930s? How does climate change threaten our future prosperity? You will find answers to these questions and more in this book.
Looking Ahead To June
Our June selection is The End of the World is Just the Beginning: The End of Globalization, by Peter Zeihan.
This book captured second place with the second highest vote total. It is almost 500 pages, however, with our May selection being only 200 pages and by announcing the June selection now, our thinking is that our members will have sufficient time to read this selection.
For generations, everything has been getting faster, better, and cheaper. Finally, we reached the point that anything you could ever want could be sent to your home within days -- even hours. America made that happen, but now America has lost interest in keeping it going.
Globe-spanning supply chains are only possible with the protection of the U.S. Navy. The American dollar underpins internationalized energy and financial markets. Complex, innovative industries were created to satisfy American consumers. American security policy forced warring nations to lay down their arms. Billions of people have been fed and educated as the American-led trade system spread across the globe. This is all ending!!
This book addresses these very important issues and more. Zeihan is prescient about the threats to globalization we are seeing today. It is highly relevant in today's world!
We hope that you enjoy reading these fine selections and we hope to see you on May 20th at 5:30 PM at It's Greek To Me to discuss "How Economics Explains the World".
Don't forget to register for the event.
