Savannah Coastal Wildlife
Our guest speakers for May 12 will be Will Meeks, Project Leader of the Savannah Coastal Wildlife Refuges (SCWR) and Dr. Rick Shields, co-founder, and current president of the Friends of the Savannah Coastal Wildlife Refuges. SCWR is comprised of seven National Wildlife Refuges spanning more than 100 miles of SC and Georgia coastlines, including Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge on Hilton Head Island. Although many activities in the national wildlife refuges have been curtailed due to the pandemic, Will Meeks will talk about the available programs and activities and improvements that are taking place, including the Hwy 278 project impact on Pinckney Island NWR. Dr. Rick Shields is a cofounder and current President of Friends of the Savannah Coastal Wildlife Refuges, an all-volunteer local non-profit group incorporated in 2008 dedicated to supporting and advocating for our local National Wildlife Refuges and for the National Wildlife Refuge System. Dr. Shields is a retired Emergency Physician and has lived in Savannah for more than 36 years.
Will Meeks is the Project Leader of the Savannah Coastal Refuges Complex comprised of seven national wildlife refuges spanning one hundred miles of South Carolina and Georgia coastline. In Will’s twenty-six-year career as a wildlife biologist he has held positions across the country from Alaska, North Dakota, Virginia, and now South Carolina.
