Reminder May 2026 Book Club Meeting

And

Call for Nominations

Gentlemen:

We will meet on May 19th, our usual 3rd Tuesday of the month, at It's Greek To Me at 5:30.  We plan to meet on the patio.

Our May selection is The Great Contradiction: The Tragic Side of the American Founding by Joseph J. Ellis, one of our favorite authors.  We are reading this book as we prepare to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our nation's founding and as we still struggle with the great contradiction.

The Great Contradiction is a historical examination of the American Founding era, focusing on the paradox at the heart of the United States’ creation: how a nation born in the name of liberty could simultaneously enshrine slavery and dispossess Native peoples. Ellis, a Pulitzer Prize–winning historian of the Revolutionary period, analyzes debates at the Constitutional Convention, key founders’ conflicting principles, and the failure to resolve these contradictions. Reviews from major outlets and book-review aggregators highlight Ellis’s nuanced, deeply researched narrative that tackles America’s foundational tensions, particularly regarding slavery and Indian removal.

 CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

Now is the time to submit your recommendations for BOTH our June selection and our summer read.  As is our normal practice, we will not meet in July and August, giving us two extra months to read a lengthier selection for our September meeting.  Please submit any recommendations for our future reads, for both June and September, to Bruce Pansius at bpansius@gmail.com.  We will be sending out a list of nominations to vote on by mid-May.

We hope to see you there.

Best regards,

Bruce and Bob, LML Book Club Co-chairs
