NOTICE FOR OCTOBER 15, 2024 MEETING

We will meet at 5:30 PM at It's Greek To Me on Tuesday, October 15th, 2024.

If you plan to come to this meeting, please click on the event in our event calendar and register.

On the 15th, we will discuss The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride.

This book has been named "a best book of the year" by the Washington Post, a "notable book" by the New York Times, a run-away NYT best seller and one of Barack Obama's "favorite books of 2023".

In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows.

As the characters’ stories overlap and deepen, it becomes clear how much the people who live on the margins of white, Christian America struggle and what they must do to survive. When the truth is finally revealed about what happened on Chicken Hill and the part the town’s white establishment played in it, McBride shows us that even in dark times, it is love and community—heaven and earth—that sustain us.

This book has been selected by the Lowcountry Coalition Against Hate for its annual "Lowcountry Reads" project.  The project's plans are for book clubs to read and discuss the book in October and then for willing participants to meet as part of a "community conversation" on Nov 20th at 5:00 PM at the HHI library as part of the HHI Crescendo Celebration of Art and Culture. This is the Coalition's second annual Lowcountry Reads project and our second time supporting it. We look forward to your participation.

Looking Ahead to November

Remember: this is your book club, and we want to read what you want to read and discuss.  All members get an opportunity to recommend and vote on the books that are selected for our monthly reads. Please forward your recommendations for our November read to Elliot at 4esiegel@gmail.com ASAP.  We will vote on and select our November read during the first week in October.

We hope to see you on the 15th at 5:30 PM at It's Greek To Me to discuss "The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store".

Don't forget to register for the event.
