John Grobe April 3 Member Career Presentation
Presentation focus will be on union work and work with the IRS retirement system.
After attending college and planning to go on to law school, he ended up taking a job as a substitute teacher in the Chicago Public Schools instead. After toughing that out for a while, he started an independent auto repair shop with an acquaintance (neither of us knew jack about business, though we did know cars).
When the business failed, he got a job at the Post Office and was a city letter carrier for about 9 years. John served as a union steward, chief steward and chapter president with the National Association of Letter Carriers.
John started working on a Masters at Loyola Chicago and by virtue of that, got a job with Treasury (IRS) in labor relations. In this challenging job he fought with the union and fired people.
Later he managed the retirement system and a career counseling/transition center in IRS' Midwest Region. Taking early retirement at age 50 in 1997, he developed a business that did career transition and retirement education work which he will retire from at year’s end.
